PhD POSITION
Studying protein vibration coupling in chromophore light harvesting performance
Funded by the programa de atracción de Talento “CESAR NOMBELA” of the Madrid community.
PROJECT 2023-T2/ECO-28965
SUPERVISOR. Dr. Sara H. Mejías (sara.hernandez@imdea.org)
EMPLOYMENT OFFER. 1-year employment contract, starting in October 2024 with the possibility of expanding the contract.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION. In Natural photosystems, aromatic molecules called chromophores are in charge of light absorption, and protein conformational changes in Natural photosystems trigger changes in the chromophore energy states associated with key functions. Mechanistic studies correlating backbone conformational changes with protein-chromophore coupling are required to elucidate these effects. However, the complexity of the natural systems has prevented the development of the theory that links the chromophore-amino acid interactions with protein conformation. In this project, we will develop a model system that allows us to study how specific interactions between chromophores and proteins affect the conformational changes in proteins. We will combine methods in molecular biology and spectroscopy to develop bio-hybrids and characterize their excited state dynamics, allowing us to develop bio-physical models that address these questions.
