PhD in Physical simulation of rapid processing of metallic materials.

IMDEA Materials Institute is a public research organization founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government to carry out research of excellence in Material Science and Engineering by attracting talent from all over the world to work in an international and multidisciplinary environment. IMDEA Materials has grown rapidly since its foundation and currently includes more than 120 researchers from 22 nationalities and has become one of the leading research centers in materials in Europe which has received the María de Maeztu seal of excellence from the Spanish government. The research activities have been focused on the areas of materials for transport, energy, and health care and the Institute has state-of-the-art facilities for processing, characterization and simulation of advanced materials.

More information can be found at our webpage.

Description

This project will focus on development of methodology for physical simulation of rapid processing of metallic materials. Physical simulation is a valuable technique to develop novel advanced metallic materials and manufacturing processes. Furthermore, it allows us to study the microstructure and property evolution in materials during manufacturing process and generate high quality data required for modelling. The main outcome of the project will be fundamental understanding of microstructure and property evolution during rapid manufacturing in different metallic materials. The pre-doctoral researcher will develop skills in physical simulation using thermo-mechanical simulator GLEEBLE, advanced microstructural characterization techniques, such as SEM, TEM and EBSD, and mechanical testing, including fatigue and fracture testing. The student will work in a very close collaboration with leading researchers from European partner universities and research centres. An opportunity for obtaining international PhD degree can also be offered.

Requirements

Candidates should hold an MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science or related disciplines with excellent academic credentials and a solid commitment to developing an academic career in an international and multidisciplinary environment.

Conditions

This project will be carried out thanks to the funding from the European Commission.

Starting date: open until filled.

Full-time contract, including social security coverage.

Enrolment in an academic PhD program.

Applications are processed upon reception. The position might be closed once ten working days have passed since publication, so we encourage early application.
