PhD position in the analysis and modeling of 5G traffic

Networks Data Science Group

 

The Networks Data Science group (http://nds.networks.imdea.org/) at IMDEA Networks Institute has an opening for one PhD student in the area of mobile network traffic analysis. The successful candidate will analyze massive Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and service-level demands collected in operational 4G/5G networks, and draw insights on their dynamics and long-term evolution as the 5G technology becomes more pervasive in terms of both deployment and user adoption. To his end, the PhD student will have privileged access to large-scale measurement datasets from leading operators amounting to Terabytes of records daily in their raw form, and to a big data analysis platform with substantial compute resources for their processing via Apache Spark. Thanks to these unique means, the candidate will make new contributions to the long track record of the NDS group in producing new knowledge of and modeling approaches for the spatial, temporal and service-level dynamics of real-world mobile traffic, along with their implications for production-grade network operations and beyond [1-8].

The successful candidate will design original AI solutions for the automation of network functionalities, perpetuating the recent history of breakthroughs achieved by the group in the development of AI for anticipatory mobile network operation [1-6]. The focus of the studies will be on surpassing a number of limitations that affect today's AI paradigms and hinder their adoption in operational industry-grade mobile network infrastructures. To this end, the candidate will contribute to devise a range of innovative AI models, implement them in emerging network architectures, and demonstrate their viability in production systems under real-world network deployments and traffic loads.

PhD position in Quantum Networking research as part of the Quantum Information Group

The advent of commercially-available quantum computers has brought forth a wide range of important applications as well as novel research directions. In parallel, there is an ongoing effort in building a global infrastructure capable of connecting quantum devices for tasks such as Quantum Key Distribution, Distributed Quantum Computation or Quantum Data transfer. The development of Quantum Networks brings forth both theoretical problems (entanglement routing, swapping and preserving

purity) as well as practical ones (the development of optical switches, repeaters and quantum memories). This PhD position is focused on the study of efficient entanglement routing algorithms in Quantum Networks, as well as closely-related problems.

 Requirements (as many as possible):

●     Degree in Physics (with knowledge of Information Theory) or in Computer Science / Mathematics (with knowledge of Quantum Physics).

●     A clear understanding of the basics of quantum computation and communication (qubit modalities, functional components of a quantum network, etc.) is a must.

●     Knowledge of classical machine learning algorithms and libraries (PyTorch, Tensorflow, Python Data Science Stack) is a strong plus.

●     Knowledge of a graph analysis and visualization library is a strong plus (such as NetworkX or similar)

PhD position in Quantum Machine Learning research as part of the Quantum Information Group

Quantum Information Group

 The success of classical Machine Learning / Deep Learning algorithms in the past decade has helped establish the field as one of the pillars of many modern research and industrial areas. With the increased availability of Quantum Computers came the desire to expand Machine Learning into the quantum domain, allowing models to be trained on quantum as well as classical data. This PhD is focused on developing efficient and scalable Quantum Machine Learning algorithms, with an emphasis on graph-based learning. Applications range from predictions on similarity graphs between quantum states, analysis and optimization of quantum circuits to learning on graph states and more general network analysis.

 

Requirements (as many as possible):

●     Degree in Physics (with knowledge of Information Theory) or in Computer Science / Mathematics (with knowledge of Quantum Physics).

The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing activities of the Wireless Networking Group, by advancing the state of the art and designing key scientific and technological enablers of future cellular networks to integrate sensing and communications. To this end, he/she will design new models and algorithms for localization and sensing procedures. All work will be carried out in the specific context of integrating the different components in a 6G open experimentation platform and demonstrate the potential of 6G for sensing and positioning services.

The NETCOM Lab invites applications for a PhD Student position supervised by Prof. Albert Banchs in digital twins for 6G mobile networks. The successful candidate will work closely with a world-leader industrial partner to do research on the use of digital twins to improve the performance of Artificial Intelligence in 6G mobile networks. The goal will be to publish the research results in top worldwide scientific venues and to patent them jointly with the industrial partners.

PhD position in the analysis of IoT Firmware and its supply chain

Cybersecurity and Internet Analytics Groups

The Cybersecurity and Internet Analytics Groups  at IMDEA Networks Institute has a joint opening for one PhD student in the area of IoT Cybersecurity. The successful candidate will analyse large-scale firmware images to detect vulnerabilities and harmful behaviours in IoT products and their software supply chain in the context of the PARASITE project.

The candidate will develop and apply scalable and efficient static and dynamic software analysis pipelines enhanced with Machine Learning techniques to 1) identify supply chain elements and dependencies in IoT firmware (Software Bill of Materials, SBOMs), 2) detect and analyze vulnerabilities and weak/malicious actors in the supply chain, 3) assess products compliance with the requirements of the new EU Cyber Resilience Act, or 4) produce empirical models to inform potential mitigations and certification and risk management methods.

The candidate will make fundamental contributions to unsolved technical and enforcement challenges that the new EU Cyber Resilience Act will bring and to the long and impactful track records of the IAG and Cybersecurity groups in the field of software analysis, cybersecurity, and privacy [See bibliographic references 1-10 below]. The PhD student will have privileged access to various cutting-edge software analysis tools, and to a big data analysis platform with substantial computing resources for their processing.

The candidate will work in the NETCOM-lab research Group, led by Albert Banchs.

The NETCOM-lab Group is looking for a Researcher to focus on advancing quantum communication technologies within our team. Key responsibilities include integrating quantum communications into evolving mobile network infrastructures such as 5G and 6G, developing mechanisms for efficient and secure information transmission in these networks, and researching cloud-native approaches for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). Additionally, the role entails contributing to the development of a quantum Internet testbed in 5TONIC lab and exploring proof-of-concepts and use cases for quantum Internet applications.
