PROJECT TITLE: Novel bioplatforms to produce pharmaceuticals and food products with methane.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project attempts to produce novel pharmaceuticals and food ingredients using greenhouse gases as the carbon source. For that, unexplored extremophilic organisms will be implemented and studied from a genomic and physiologic perspective and from a bioprocess engineering point of view. This will be attempted following three different approaches: 1. Genomic mining and isolation of novel extremophilic microorganisms able to produce valuable extremolytes using methane as the carbon and energy source; 2. Culture optimization to produce these novel pharmaceuticals and food ingredients in batch bioreactors. 3. Design and operation of advanced continuous bioreactors to develop novel extremophilic circular processes. Thus, the selected researcher will have the following tasks: Genomic mining and bioinformatic analysis, physiological studies involved in the valorization of greenhouse gases, cultivations, enrichments and isolation of extremophiles using gases as substrate, optimization and operation of the process in advanced bioreactors.
