IMDEA Materials Institute is a public research organization founded in 2007 by Madrid’s regional government to carry out research of excellence in Material Science and Engineering by attracting talent from all over the world to work in an international and multidisciplinary environment. IMDEA Materials has grown rapidly since its foundation and currently includes more than 120 researchers from 22 nationalities and has become one of the leading research centers in materials in Europe which has received the María de Maeztu seal of excellence from the Spanish government. The research activities have been focused on the areas of materials for transport, energy, and health care and the Institute has state-of-the-art facilities for processing, characterization and simulation of advanced materials. DESCRIPTION
The project, at the interface between 3D printing and material informatics, is focused on additive manufacturing of porous structures optimized by material genomics approach consisting of a high-throughput methodology directed towards large-scale exploration of the material structure space and the structure-property relationships within. The doctoral work is funded an EU m.ERA-NET grant in collaboration with Technion (Israel Institute of Technology) and the Institute for Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
There are two positions offered within this project, one involving experimental work and another mainly computational. This job posting is related to the latter.
The computational PhD project will revolve around building a virtual 3D printing and characterization methodology allowing to quickly assess the characteristics of thousands of prototype designs to select ones worth experimental characterization. It will combine advanced feature engineering using mixed topology and geometry tools as well as results from both finite element and atomistic simulations of porous metal structures. The Ph.D. will gain broad experience reaching into the multiple disciplines involved, e.g. material simulations, material informatics, and applied topology.
Is expected that this work will give rise to several publications in peer-reviewed international journals and it will give the candidates the opportunity to present their work at major international conferences.
Additionally, the researchers will join regular training activities on transferable skills organized by the Project Management Office at IMDEA in project management, leadership, funding search, grant writing, intellectual property and science communication to specialized and non-specialized audiences.
REQUIREMENTS
A M.Sc. degree in material science, chemistry, computer science, applied mathematics, or related field.
Working knowledge of a programming language.
Fluent in English.
Previous research experience and/or experience with material modeling is a plus.
CONDITIONS
Screening of candidates will begin immediately. Short-listed candidates will be invited for an initial interview via Zoom.
Interested candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to ensure the best consideration of their application.
The expected start date is September 1st, 2022 (depending on availability).
The position includes a full-time contract with social security coverage.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The working language of the Institute is English. Full command of the English language is required in all positions.
IMDEA Materials Institute is committed to equal opportunities, diversity and the promotion of a healthy work environment and work-life balance. Female applicants are encouraged to apply to our research and technical positions. See our Gender Equality Plan here.
Applications are processed upon reception. The position might be closed once the minimum publication days have passed, so we encourage early application.
