Description:

The project is focused on the development of new metallic materials for additive manufacturing (3D printing) using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology. After a selection of the metallic alloy system the work will comprise the alloying design, the alloying development by manufacturing prototypes, heat treatments optimization and characterization, the powder development and the SLM process development. The main activities will revolve around computational thermodynamics calculations (CalPhaD) to explore different potential materials candidates (e.g. potential phases, kinetics of species diffusion, transformation temperatures, etc.), ingot casting, heat treatments optimization using a Gleeble machine, powder gas atomization, powder characterization and selective laser melting manufacturing and bulk materials characterization.

The doctoral work will be covered by an official grant (FPI) under a call of the National Agency of Research (Agencia Estatal de Investigación) as part of the María de Maeztu programme.

The Ph.D. candidate will acquire hands-on experience with state-of-the-art processing and characterization of materials (e.g. electron microscopy, powder characterization, physical simulation, sample preparation and testing), as well as in computational methods for thermodynamics of complex metallic alloys (e.g. using the CalPhaD method). The student will gain expertise in several fields of high employability (e.g. additive manufacturing, advanced manufacturing and characterization) and experience in both fundamental and applied research in materials and metallurgy.
Requirements:The candidate should have a degree (MSc or equivalent) in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline, with excellent academic credentials, at the time of the acceptance of the grant (late spring of 2021). Candidates with prior knowledge or experience in processing and characterization of metallic materials are strongly encouraged to apply.

Full proficiency in English, oral and written, is mandatory. Knowledge of Spanish is not required (complimentary classes offered weekly at IMDEA Materials).

Conditions:Full-time contract including social security coverageEnrollment in a PhD programme

Interested candidates should submit their Curriculum Vitae, a brief cover letter addressing their motivation and scientific interests, as well as academic credentials.
