IMDEA Materials Institute seeks a PhD Student (Research assistant) to work on a project focused on the development and applications of hybrid data-driven-experimental approaches for advanced composite materials design. The general aim of the project is to develop the next generation polymer nanocomposites with improved mechanical and fire-safety properties in the context of their applications in energy and transport. The research will involve synthesis and characterization of various nanocomposite materials as well as applications of statistical machine learning and optimization techniques to guide the experimental work towards better designs at lower R&D costs.

The exact scope of the to-be-pursuit project will be determined on the basis of current needs as well as the previous experience, skills and interests of the successful candidate.

REQUIREMENTS

An ideal candidate would hold a MSC degree in the area of material science, physical chemistry or chemical physics, and have laboratory experience in the area of material synthesis and characterization as well as practical training in computer programing and data analysis (e.g. Python and its data analysis libraries, R or a similar tool). However, a strongly motivated candidate who lacks any of the above will also be given a serious consideration.

Moreover, it is expected that the successful candidate will be independent, creative, curiosity-driven, motivated to explore solutions to difficult scientific problems, and have strong work ethics. Excellent academic credentials will be a plus. Strong communication skills in English (both spoken and written) are necessary in this position.
